Join Us This Friday 2/6: Crafting for a Cause & Community Action

Chastity Dunlap

Hello Fiber Friends,

This Friday, February 6th, features two connected events centered around craft, community, and action. Whether you knit, crochet, or simply want to make a difference, there’s a place for you.

1. Resistance Hat Public Knitting/Crocheting

· Time: 7:00 PM
· Location: Brown Cow Ice Cream Parlor – 7347 Madison St., Forest Park, IL
· Goal: To come together and create “Melt the ICE” hats—a modern take on the Norwegian Resistance hat—for ourselves and others. Afterward, those who wish can wear their hats to the community meeting at Robert’s Westside. We hope to see you there.

The Inspiration:
During the 1940s, Norwegians wore red pointed hats as a peaceful protest against Nazi occupation. The “Melt the ICE” pattern, designed by Needle & Skein in Minneapolis, continues this spirit of resistance. All pattern proceeds support immigrant aid agencies assisting those impacted by ICE.

Pattern & Materials:
· The pattern is available for knitting and crochet, adaptable for various yarn weights.
· Ravelry Pattern Links: Crochet | Knitting
· Please bring red yarn if you have it. We will also have a limited amount of worsted weight red yarn available at the shop later this week for those who need it.

Donations Welcome:
We are also collecting finished Melt the ICE hats and other winter gear for those in need. Please attach a tag with fiber content and washing instructions. (Please note: If you wish to mail your donations, contact us for the mailing address. DO NOT MAIL DONATIONS TO THE STORE.)

2. Community Meeting: "WTF Can We Do?"
· Time: 8:00 PM
· Location: Robert's Westside – 7321 Madison St., Forest Park, IL

Following the crafting session, please join us for a community gathering to discuss tangible, peaceful actions we can take to support those negatively affected by current policies.

What to Expect:
· Guest Speakers
· Sign-Making (some supplies provided, but please bring your own if possible)
· Networking with like-minded community members
· Concrete action steps and ways to get involved

Call for Speakers:
If you are involved with rapid response teams, community organizations, mutual aid groups, or have a suggestion for a speaker, please contact Donnie at donnie@robertswestside.com.

A Personal Note
This, for me, has never been about politics. It is about morality, human decency, constitutional rights, and, most of all, love for our fellow humans. If you feel the need to do something more than despair, please join us. Let’s stitch together, not just hats, but a stronger, more compassionate community.

Crafters are some of the best people. I know you have good hearts, and I truly believe we can create meaningful change—together.
